Different Styles of Bellydancing
AMERICAN CABERT STYLE Movement - the 10 fundamental movement groups of native Oriental dance are used. It isn’t uncommon to add movements from ballet and jazz. Examples of this might be leg kicks, arabesques, arm positions, spins, postures... These external influences are also often present in native styles.
Movement expression - this is where styles start becoming distinguished from one another. While the different styles draw primarily on the same fundamental movement groups, and even external movement, the way in which they are executed are defining.
In American style the movements are produced with precision/athleticism/grace. In addition to the above quality... the movements themselves are typically executed much larger, more dramatically than in Arab styles. The arms and hands are more involved and are often a focal point. More traveling, also more of a tendency to define space around the body with dramatic movement.
While still on movement expression... Symmetry and balance. This is employed differently from Arab styles. In this style use of movement with the upper and lower body is often balanced. Using both equally, alternating, repeating or slightly varying movement especially with respect to audience view - facing the side, the front, the side
Essence - The American dancer is theatrical. I don’t mean in a flamboyant, false or ridiculous sense. I mean that the air projected remains true to the rules of the theater - it’s formal, it’s performance and all that entails.
Also, there is the matter of who we are. An Arab dancer will perform with the world view, life experiences, cultural frame work etc. of an Arab woman. An American dancer does the same thing, she brings her own world view, life experiences, cultural frame work etc. to her performance.
Purpose - American style has the same goal as all other styles of dance, to physically and emotionally manifest the music.
Music - One noted difference is that American style is not locked into music from one region. You will find all different types of music present in this style. Starting from the Caucasus, Turkey, North Africa, and the Middle East. Heavily orchestrated Egyptian music and pop is not favored though. For pure and authentic music I would say the style draws primarily on Turkish music.
Trivia: Bellydance Featured On T.V. Prince featured his now ex-wife (I think she is his ex now) Mayte on his video "7" and "The One" where she performs a flawless Turkish drop (the big back bend).
